CyberGhost VPN Review
Designed to protect you from online threats and frauds and help you bypass geographic restrictions, a Virtual Private Network (VPN) also has the ability to help you stay anonymous throughout your online sessions. No matter what your reason is behind using a VPN, you can be confident that it can do its job perfectly, provided you find a good VPN service provider.
Currently based both in Germany and in Romania, CyberGhost VPN was first established in the year 2011 with the aim of defending “privacy as a basic human right”. The service is now used by more than 15 million internet users worldwide. So, how does it stack up compared to some of the other leading VPN services? Let’s find out.
Is My Privacy Protected with CyberGhost VPN?
When it comes to privacy, CyberGhost VPN is quite straightforward and clear in presenting itself. The company uses clear and precise words, without being too lengthy, to let users know about their no logs policy. Of course, like many other leading VPN services, CyberGhost also has a Strict No Logs Policy. The company’s servers maintain no logs and they also don’t monitor or track your online activities. Therefore, your online privacy remains intact and you cannot be tracked back after you visit any website.
The information that the company might hold: your login name, your password, and your activated serial numbers.
CyberGhost VPN clearly mentions that it doesn’t communicate your information to third parties – “no email address, given to us for what reason ever (sales, support, promotion, whatever) can be used to track down a CyberGhost identity or will be communicated to third parties”. There is also an automatic kill switch to further enhance your online privacy.
How Much is CyberGhost VPN? Is There a Free Trial?
CyberGhost VPN offers three different pricing plans: a 2-year plan priced at $42 for the initial 2 years, followed by $84 for the rest of your subscription period; a yearly plan priced at $35.88 for the first year, followed by $71.76 in the following years, and; a monthly plan priced at $5.99 for the first month, followed by $11.98 for the rest of the following months.
Comparing the plans to the other VPN service providers we have reviewed so far, CyberGhost happens to be the only VPN service to offer such low subscription fees for the initial years or month. However, taking into account the original pricing, for the years and months that follow, we have to say that this may not be the cheapest service you can find in the market today. Each of these subscription plans includes “all the CyberGhost apps, dedicated customer support and access to the fastest VPN servers on 7 devices at the same time”. CyberGhost doesn’t seem to offer a free trial for users to try its services. However, the company does offer a 30 days money back guarantee, no questions asked, for all its products. Another cool feature they offer is the CyberGhost Premium account upgrade which is available to selected reviewers with existing accounts (see here for activation instructions). This upgrade entitles you to use the CyberGhost “Extra Speed” servers which route your preferred traffic through the fastest hardware. When it comes to payment methods, the company accepts all major credit cards, Bitcoin, PayPal, and other payment solutions like SOFORT, Direct Debit, Giropay, etc. based on your country of residence. In addition, in certain countries like Austria, Switzerland, and Germany, CyberGhost VPN services can also be bought offline from resellers like Saturn, MediaMarkt, and Amazon, for which you can also choose to pay cash.
CyberGhost VPN Speed Test
CyberGhost has more than 1,000 servers located across 30+ countries in different parts of the globe. Hence, the company promises to deliver “highest possible speed ” for its VPN users. When tested, while CyberGhost VPN connects on the first try, the connection speed may not be the fastest when compared to the other VPN services we have tested so far. However, when it comes to download and upload speeds, the VPN service performs quite well, without any lag.
Like the company mentions, there are certain factors that could affect the speed of your connection, such as: your internet connection, distance to your chosen VPN server, number of users sharing a server, and quality of hardware. CyberGhost supports P2P file sharing (torrent-friendly), for which the service automatically connects to the fastest available server, and the speed delivered by the VPN service seems to be sufficient to stream video content online without any trouble.
How is Customer Service at CyberGhost VPN?
In case you find it difficult to install the CyberGhost app on your device, need some technical help, or have a general query to be answered, you can contact the VPN service’s customer support team via their support Ticket or Live Chat.
Though they mention it as Live Chat, live help was not available when we tried to contact the team. This may be because of the time difference and the fact that the VPN service doesn’t offer a 24/7 support feature. This is definitely a drawback for the company, especially when there are a lot of other VPN service providers that offer the same. However, their team of representatives is knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly, like they should be.
There is a fairly comprehensive Help & FAQ page with setup guides for different devices, Troubleshooter, and Announcements, where you can find answers to some of your questions. And there is no contact number or phone support.
The CyberGhost interface is often considered to be dark and gloomy and is not liked by many users. The website, however, is quite easy to navigate around and the information available is comprehensive. Signing up for the service is easy, and with all the setup guides provided by the service, download and installation wouldn’t be a problem either.
As mentioned before, the VPN service has more than 1,000 servers operating in over 30 locations around the world, and you can either let the service choose a server location for you automatically or choose a country on your own.
The native protocols supported by CyberGhost VPN are OpenVPN, L2TP/IPsec, IPsec, and PPTP. In addition, there is also CyberGhost Client available for Android (APK download or Google Play Store), Mac OS, and Windows, with functions like proxy, random port connection, SecureDisconnect, SecureConnect, and more. In terms of security, the VPN service recommends the CyberGhost Client as the most secure option because of its extended functionality.
Other features offered by CyberGhost VPN include:
- Highest level of encryption
- Public Wi-Fi protection
- Strict no logs policy
- Multi-platform support – Windows, Mac, Android, Linux, Routers, and iOS
- Secure conversations and transactions
- Globally diversified servers
- Block malicious content
- Block ads
- Block online tracking
- Unlimited bandwidth and traffic
When it comes to connections, CyberGhost VPN allows up to 5 simultaneous connections on different devices. Overall, the list of features offered by CyberGhost VPN is quite extensive, and there are also some that you wouldn’t get from other service providers, which makes this VPN service stand apart.
Is CyberGhost VPN Safe?
Like most VPN service providers, CyberGhost also uses 256-bit AES encryption, which is known to be the strongest of all, to encrypt your online transmissions. As mentioned earlier, the service also has an automatic kill switch, which is designed to stop all your internet activities if your connection to the VPN server gets disconnected, to ensure maximum security.
There is a Block Online Tracking feature with which the VPN service removes all the web elements that have tracking codes, thus blocking online tracking. One other security feature is Block Malicious Content, where the service’s malware blocker will make sure that the website you’re about to visit is safe for you, by verifying its URL. In addition, CyberGhost also offers DNS and IP leak protection.
CyberGhost is a great option for people who are already experienced in using a VPN service. The tough interface could be a hurdle for new users, especially those totally new to using a VPN service, and may require some time to get used to. The pricing is quite high, except for the initial period. However, what makes the VPN service a desired one is its set of features and amazing security.
