proXPN: Is it capable of providing comprehensive security?
As Internet users, we no longer have complete online privacy. From governments to cybercriminals, our online activities are constantly being tracked, and the risk of us losing our identity is increasing every day. The solution? VPN!
Despite operating in the industry for a long time now, proXPN is not a commonly known name among VPN users. Could this be because of inadequate marketing or unimpressive service? Let’s find some answers.
Is My Privacy Protected with ProXPN?
The information that the company collects includes: users’ sign-up details, email, and password, and this extends to payment details for premium account customers. However, proXPN states that they only use this information to contact their users regarding their products and services, and that they “will NOT share this information with anyone. Period.” This information sharing policy gives us confidence on the level of privacy offered by the VPN service, because we have seen service providers who directly state that they use and share user information for different purposes. However, there is no mention of the availability of a kill switch on their website.
On the whole, we are certainly happy with the privacy level offered by proXPN.
How Much is ProXPN? Is There a Free Trial?
proXPN offers two different pricing plans: Basic and Premium. If you have already heard of the VPN service, you would probably know that it is quite famous for its Basic plan.
As the name implies, the Basic pricing plan is available for free, and hence is suitable for those looking to test the service, or just in need of some basic VPN features. While the privacy and security features available for this account are the same as the Premium account, your speed, access to servers, and other such features will be limited.
With the Premium account, on the other hand, there are no limits on speeds, and users have access to more advanced features, such as torrenting, access to servers worldwide, and more. If you choose the Premium pricing plan, you can go with three different subscription options: 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months, each priced at $9.98 per month, $49.95 semi-annually, and $74.95 annually respectively.
For Premium account users, proXPN offers a 30-day risk-free trial, so you can test the service’s features and request for a full refund if you are not satisfied with the same.
Although the pricing is not the lowest we have seen, the fact that the VPN service offers an exclusive free plan to benefit users is attractive and appreciated.
ProXPN Speed Test
proXPN has only limited server locations. As we always say, the number of servers hosted by a VPN service always has an impact on the speed it can deliver. With this VPN service, even though they promise unlimited bandwidth and VPN speed, it has to be said that the speeds we experienced weren’t up to par.
As mentioned earlier, the speed for the Basic account is already limited, but even with the Premium account, we cannot call the speed lightening fast. And since the speed isn’t too slow either, you shouldn’t experience any lag during your online activities. Therefore, streaming and P2P sharing shouldn’t be a big issue.
How is Customer Service at ProXPN?
Like most other VPN services, proXPN also takes customer service seriously, but only for its Premium account customers. The VPN service offers customer support via three channels: email, phone, and their Twitter support channel. Yes, this is quite extensive when compared to many other VPN service providers; however, the fact that there is no live chat support is a bit of a disappointment. And although they mention that users can contact them “day or night”, there is no mention about 24/7 customer support. There is also an FAQ section that you can use to gather some basic information.
The proXPN website is simple and the layout is convenient, enabling us to navigate around the website with ease. However, we did feel that there was just too much information on the main page, which was a bit overwhelming.
Signing up for the VPN service is an easy task. If you wish to sign up for the Basic account, all you need to provide is your email address and a preferred password. On the other hand, if you choose to go with the Premium plan, you should first choose a subscription type, enter your email address and preferred password, and then choose the payment method you would like to use.
proXPN has an application for Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android devices, and Premium account users are given the ability to use the service on multiple devices.
As mentioned before, the VPN service only has a limited number of server locations which you can choose from, something that is actually quite underwhelming. The features offered by proXPN are basic, which include: easy setup and use, data and identity protection, online privacy, IP hiding, PPTP connectivity, and mobile device support.
In addition, there is another feature available for Premium users, called VPN Guard, which allows you to choose the programs that you want to shut down automatically if your VPN connection is dropped for some reason. Yes, it sounds more like a kill switch. Other than that, there is no other unique or exclusive feature offered by proXPN.
Is ProXPN Safe?
proXPN supports three VPN protocols: PPTP, IPSec, and OpenVPN. When it comes to encryption, the VPN service uses MPPE-128 for PPTP, AES256 for IPSec, and Blowfish CBC 512 bit encryption with 2048 bit keys for OpenVPN. Unfortunately, proXPN doesn’t offer the highest levels of security like many other VPN services do with their military grade AES 256 bit encryption.
However, when we tested the service, we did not detect any IP, WebRTC, or DNS leaks, which is a major plus.
