SaferWeb VPN Review

SaferWeb is a UK-base VPN provider looking to bring in the novice VPN user with simple software and a straightforward approach. There has been mixed reactions from users about this VPN but let’s get to the truth and see if this VPN is worth spending money on.

Is My Privacy Protected with SaferWeb VPN?

SaferWeb does not keep usage logs, but they do keep some connection logs as stated in their Privacy Policy. Information on these logs includes time stamps, user IP address, the VPN username, and the protocol used. SaferWeb’s policy is clearly better than keeping usage logs but still far from ideal (especially when considering any illegal activity!).

How Much is SaferWeb VPN? Is There a Free Trial?

SaferWeb advertise two plans to choose from on their homepage: Premium and Super Premium. The difference between these is the amount of locations (7 and 30) and simultaneous connections (one and three allowed). Right about now is when everything stops making sense, though.

SaferWeb do offer a 30-day money back guarantee, although this is not an option for their month-to-month plan, which rather defeats the purpose. SaferWeb also don’t offer any free trials, meaning you are forced to sign up to one of the plans just to try out the service.

Payment options include PayPal and the usual credit card brands, but I was disappointed to see the lack of a Bitcoin payment option.

SaferWeb VPN Speed Test

Safer Web is reasonably fast and reliable right out of the box. It also has no bandwidth or a speed cap, which means that your connection’s performance will be unaffected irrespective of how heavy your usage is.

More significantly, you can get a ‘supercharged locations’ add on. This grants you access to an exclusive list of super-fast servers, and is ideal if you make a lot of downloads and need them to complete fast.

How is Customer Service at SaferWeb VPN?

Safer Web’s customer support was okay to say the least, nothing to be hyped up about though. You can get in touch by opening a support ticket via email.

Alternatively, you can talk to a customer support representative in real time via a live chat that’s available 24 hours a day.

The website also has a comprehensive knowledgebase with information on setting up your VPN, tweaking it for optimum performance and addressing all the most common issues you might encounter.
The responses as per my experience are very detailed and written in simple English that’s easy to understand.

Is SaferWeb VPN Safe?

SaferWeb customers can choose between using the OpenVPN, PPTP and IKEv2 protocols from within the client. I was happy to see support for IKEv2, which makes configuring and using mobile devices with a VPN considerably easier.

As mentioned earlier, SaferWeb is based in the U.K and is forced to adhere to the country’s strict data retention and monitoring laws. The UK is one of the most undesirable countries for a VPN provider, with incoming legislation such as The Snooper’s Charter set to further degrade general privacy.

One of the biggest factors for me is a VPN provider’s encryption strength. Whether it’s Blowfish-128 or AES-256, the strength of encryption is crucial for VPNs. Unfortunately, SaferWeb does not state what kind of encryption they use. Attempts at trying to request this information from SaferWeb were unsuccessful.

SaferWeb’s omission of the service’s encryption methods led me to believe that they aren’t willing to disclose this information for one reason or another. Whether this is due to using weak encryption or just lackluster transparency remains to be seen.

Bottom Line

Safer Web has a low number of server locations. That said, its ease of use, solid set of features and reasonably fast speeds still make it worth looking into, and its ‘supercharged servers’ add-on guarantees fast speeds even if you’re a demanding user.
