SecurityKISS VPN Review

SecurityKISS is an Irish VPN with such a strong focus on ease of use that it's built into the company name (KISS = ‘Keep it Smart & Simple’). So it's a little odd that the company also has one of the most complicated pricing structures around: five plans, all with different features, and each available for 1, 3, 6 or 12-month subscriptions.

Is My Privacy Protected with SecurityKISS VPN?

SecurityKISS has surprisingly brief contract pages, which try to address the points you need to know, while also keeping tedious legal jargon to the absolute minimum.
The company clearly states that it doesn't "monitor, record or store logs for any connection activity". It does record more session-related data than usual, though, including date, time and duration of the VPN connection, bandwidth used and the "user IP address". These details are apparently automatically deleted after 10 days.
SecurityKISS doesn't keep any personal information about you other than your email address, if you've provided it.
The company states that it won't release any details about anyone or their account unless legally required, but also points out that this has never happened before.
While scanning the small-print, we noticed a very strict clause on pornography. Every VPN bans child pornography, of course, but SecurityKISS says you mustn't "access or transmit pornography" of any type, ever, at all. Everyone has their own views on what's acceptable, but we think that this VPN is prohibiting perfectly legal activities a step too far.
On the plus side, there's a welcome cancellation clause. If you decide to cancel your membership at any time, the company will calculate any remaining balance proportionally and refund it to your account.

Privacy Policy
Logging Policy
We do not monitor, record or store logs for any connection activity, except for the following:

  • Time and duration of the user VPN connection
  • Bandwidth used during the connection
  • User IP address

We use this data only to monitor service usage per user and to generate statistics.
It would be technically unfeasible to maintain log files with details about user activity because of the huge amount of data which is transferred through our servers.
The logs are automatically deleted after 10 days and the only information that is kept for a long time is total usage per billing period (for example 14GB in a given month) and SecurityKISS client ID.

Collecting Personal Information
We do not store any personal information except for:

  • email address if you enter it on the website
  • user's name and address if we receive them from the payment system

When using the free version of SecurityKISS Tunnel we do not typically have any of this information.
Upgrading to the premium version can also be completely anonymous if you pay with Bitcoin.
We never collect any financial information like credit card numbers.
Upon request, we can delete all personal information from our service except the email address which we use to contact the user. We have security measures in place to protect the loss, misuse and alteration of the data under our control.

Information Sharing and Disclosure
We will never release any information about you or your account to anyone except law enforcement personnel with the proper documentation and paperwork. We do not and will not monitor user sessions for inappropriate behavior, unless compelled to by law enforcement with proper documentation and paperwork.
We are under Ireland jurisdiction. It has never happened that we disclosed a user’s information to anyone.

SecurityKISS is unique with regard to privacy and anonymity because registration is not required to use our service. We are not aware of any other VPN service that does not require registration.
In the free version, we do not even need your email address. Simply go to the website, download the program and connect.
How can you achieve more anonymity?

How Much is SecurityKISS VPN? Is There a Free Trial?

Prices for SecurityKISS’s plans are slightly below average, but the bandwidth limits included with these plans make SecurityKISS a bad option if you are looking to do any streaming or downloading. Additionally, certain locations (such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and Russia) are only available with higher tier plans.

With SecurityKISS offering a free VPN, the absence of a money-back guarantee is somewhat understandable. If you do choose to cancel, SecurityKISS gives you a prorated refund of any remaining balance on your account.

SecurityKISS has an impressive range of payment options, including all the main credit cards, Bitcoin, Paypal, and wire transfer. I am especially happy to see Bitcoin, as this increases overall anonymity.

SecurityKISS VPN Speed Test

Service costs are relatively high, but our speed tests* suggest it might be worth the cash. UK-UK connections were consistently around 30Mbps (close to what we’d normally get with no VPN). Our UK-Los Angeles test also delivered 30Mbps, surprisingly, so we tried a few other US servers. They were all slower, even when geographically much closer, but still delivered 15Mbps at a minimum, which was very impressive.

How is Customer Service at SecurityKISS VPN?

SecurityKISS only offers email support and a live chat service (through Zendesk), which operates during regular business hours. There is also an FAQ section and multiple troubleshooting guides for various devices and scenarios. This level of support checks out for a free VPN service. To better understand the response time and knowledge of the support staff, I contacted SecurityKISS through the live chat service.

Is SecurityKISS VPN Safe?

SecurityKISS gives you the option of choosing between the OpenVPN and L2TP/IPsec protocol. Those looking for maximum security will be happy to see the option for OpenVPN, but L2TP/IPsec also has advantages.

I mentioned earlier that SecurityKISS is an Irish company. This means it is subject to Irish data retention laws. While I haven’t seen any cases of SecurityKISS handing over user data to the government, this is something to keep in mind.

The SecurityKISS encryption is rather measly with 128-bit Blowfish encryption and 1024-bit RSA certificates for sessions. Although this isn’t terrible, I’d like to see an improved level of encryption (for example, AES-256) before recommending SecurityKISS.

SecurityKISS’s policy on P2P activity and torrenting aren’t mentioned anywhere, although there is a broad “Prohibited Uses of the Service,” which says that all users should abide by copyright laws. Regardless, unless you are signed up to the Emerald plan (no data cap), you probably won’t want to do any torrenting anyway.

Bottom Line

SecurityKISS as a free option isn’t terrible, with the 300 MB/day data limit being a generous amount when compared to other free VPNs. If you do enjoy SecurityKISS’s service, being able to pay in Bitcoin and without registering an account also adds a nice degree of anonymity.

On the other hand, connection speeds were largely inconsistent, and I never heard back from SecurityKISS regarding my support query. Couple these with the fact that SecurityKISS is subject to Ireland’s tough data retention laws, and it’s easy to see why SecurityKISS is a VPN you probably want to avoid.
