Sun VPN Review

SunVPN was launched in 2010 in the US. It was founded by an enthusiastic team of professionals with over 20 years spent in IT. What makes this VPN service stand out is its plug-n-play VPN model, making it very easy to use, even for individuals with little to no experience with Internet security. This SunVPN review will go into greater detail, showing you all you need to know about the company and its service.

Is My Privacy Protected with SunVPN?

On the topic of security, we have a lot of concerns when it comes to SunVPN. This is the list of personal information they require during the registration process:

  • Full name
  • Email address
  • Billing address
  • Telephone number
  • IP address
  • The name of the bank that issued your card

They claim they’ll “never” share this information with any third parties, unless (there’s always an “unless”):

  • You violate the Digital Millennium Act of 1998
  • You indulge in criminal activities
  • You use SunVPN for hacking
  • You try to access the SunVPN network without authorization
  • You commit other criminal acts under international/US laws

Furthermore, they log a significant amount of data. They do delete that information after 90 days, but we’d take a strict no-logging policy over that any time of the day. The data they log includes:

  • Login dates
  • Logout dates
  • Username
  • IP address
  • Time connected
  • Inbound and outbound traffic for every session
  • Errors and warnings

Moreover, they didn’t quite define the criteria under which they’re authorized to notify law enforcement of your supposed “criminal activity.”
Also, note that the official SunVPN website apparently doesn’t feature an SSL Certificate.
With all this, we can’t recommend SunVPN as a safe and privacy-oriented service provider. They use an outdated authentication key and collect a ton of your personal data. If you think you can trust this VPN provider, then there’s nothing to worry about, we suppose.

Privacy Policy
When you browse a website, the website needs to know an IP address to send data back to, otherwise your device would never be able to communicate with any services or websites correctly. This target IP address is usually owned by your ISP, and can be used to identify you as an individual.
By using a VPN service, when your device communicates with a target website or service, the origin information provided belongs to the VPN provider. If you signed up and connected to our VPN service today and looked back at the home page, you'd see a different IP address and location. This is the IP address and location of the VPN server you would have selected after creating an account with us. The target website or service no longer knows your IP address or approximate location.
Aside from websites and other services not knowing your IP address and (approximate) location, your ISP would not know what services and websites you were accessing. This is because your device would only appear to communicate with our VPN server. The traffic between your device and the VPN server would be encrypted, which means that your ISP wouldn't be able to view or modify traffic between your device and our VPN servers.
As well as your ISP not being able to view your traffic, other users on the same network as you will also be left in the dark. This is because the encrypted communication starts at your device.
Although you can see your IP address and location information on our website, we don't log these details. We have disabled the logging of source IP addresses from our users to protect your privacy.

What is a VPN?
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) creates a secure tunnel between two or more devices. This secure tunnel can prevent malicious entities from inspecting traffic between these devices. One of the effects of using a VPN service is that it can make you appear is if you're accessing the Internet from a different location than where you actually are.
There are a number of reasons you may want to use a VPN, including:

  • To access geofenced services such as BBC iPlayer or Netflix
  • To access websites which have been blocked in your country
  • You're connecting to the Internet over an untrusted network (such as a public WiFi hotspot), and wish to prevent potentially malicious entities from inspecting your traffic
  • To prevent your ISP (Internet Service Provider) from inspecting your traffic. ISPs can inspect, profile, sell and potentially modify your traffic if you're not using a VPN

How can I trust your service?
As with any VPN provider, you as an individual must trust that what a VPN provider says is true. If users didn't trust their VPN provider then the VPN provider would probably go out of business very quickly. We at SunVPN make it our business to stay out of your business. We don't keep any VPN or DNS logs.
If you're particularly keen on trying to keep the content and target of your communications private, we would recommend looking into a project called Tor (for security reasons, we don't provide a link to this project - you'll be able to search for it on popular search engines). The bulk of funding for Tor's development has come from the federal government of the United States, initially through the Office of Naval Research and DARPA.
Tor is free and (arguably) more secure than using a VPN service offered by a provider, but it is usually slower, and many website owners block access to their website from devices which are known to be originating from the Tor network.

What do you log?
When you browse to SunVPN, it stores logs on users which includes user agent string and requested resource. IP address information is not logged. With regards to using the VPN service, SunVPN does not store VPN or DNS logs.

How Much is SunVPN? Is There a Free Trial?

SunVPN Speed Test

The company delivers high Internet speeds, unlimited bandwidth and unmetered data transfer to its customers. All the hardware required for their services is owned by the company and also, they have their servers located at the best datacenters worldwide. The company due to its diligence and great service is also able to maintain a network uptime of 99% with no noticeable downtime. This ensures a very high speed, uninterrupted service and is very beneficial to stream movies or videos, play games, VOIP based applications like Skype or Google Talk, for downloading or even simply browsing. However, P2P programs are not allowed on SunVPN.

How is Customer Service at SunVPN?

SunVPN provides excellent and complete customer support, by raising tickets. Their customer support staff is knowledgeable and co-operative. They promptly respond to 80% of the tickets raised within a minimum period of 2 hours.

Features

SunVPN operates 10 servers located in the USA (3 servers), Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Romania, Singapore, and Hong Kong. This is a small number of servers and it’s definitely not enough to cover the globe with a pristine VPN service that the company boasts about. They advertise as “the best VPN on the planet,” but their number of gateways couldn’t possibly back up those claims.

Note that you’re not allowed to connect to two different servers from the same account or you’ll be banned without receiving a refund. This is an ok demand since sharing shouldn’t be allowed, but you’ll get a ban even if you do it by accident, which can (and does) happen. The banning policy here is just too restrictive and harsh for our taste.

Depending on the pricing plan you choose, you’ll have access to 2 simultaneous connections, which is also a rather small number since we all use at least 3 devices at all times. SunVPN definitely needs to expand on this.

A neat feature of SunVPN is their cancellation policy. You can basically cancel the service any time you want and you’re never in any sort of long-term contract with them. They have 1, 3, and 12 months as billing periods and you simply pay as you go.

They do provide their users with unlimited bandwidth, but P2P and torrenting are not allowed on any of the servers.

Is SunVPN Safe?

SunVPN offers OpenVPN, PPTP, and L2TP protocols. We’ll recommend OpenVPN, as always. This protocol comes with AES-256 cipher, which is currently the strongest on the market. However, they still use 1024-bit certificates, which have been proven as insufficient in this day and age.

We like to see StealthVPN technology since it provides an extra layer of encryption and security. It’s also the only feature that will allow you to use VPNs in countries that usually block them with restrictive firewalls.

Bottom Line

To conclude, SunVPN offers its subscribers with a fast, secure and great VPN service. Though at first glance, the plans appear to be expensive, they have a capable support system, along with good infrastructure and a very liberal money-back guarantee. If you are in need of a secure and reliable VPN connection, take a look at the offers provided by this company.
