Logs of user activity

Plan used: Monthly Plan
These included the user access, DNS requests, timestamps, bandwidth usage and user’s IP address. There is no mandatory data retention laws that the VPN service has to abide to. This is as a result of the Geographical location of the VPN.

Lacks Kill Switch.

Plan used: Yearly Plan
I've been using this VPN for a while and I'm pleased with the speeds and unlimited multiple connections. One important missing feature is the automatic skill switch which many similarly priced VPNs have.

Customer service could be improved.

Plan used: Weekly Plan
ZenVPN is a pretty decent VPN with good speeds and affordable pricing. When I had an issue though, I found my location made their live chat feature virtually impossible.

Geographical limitations

Plan used: Yearly Plan
BolehVPN has 35 VPN services strategically located in 12 countries around the world. This limited my access to their services when I was out of this 12 Nations. It consequently affects the speed.

The use of L2TP protocol

Plan used: Yearly Plan
BolehVPN also offered me the L2TP protocol, which is a less secure option. This is in comparison with OpenVPN protocol. Please just restrict everything to the OpenVPN protocol because it is more safe.

ZenVPN: Can it deliver?

If you are someone who loves enjoying unrestricted internet access and unlimited video streaming with security and privacy, then a virtual private network is the solution for you. All the websites blocked in your country can be bypassed easily with the use of a VPN.

ZenVPN service is available for free for anyone who are not worried about bandwidth caps and restrictions. Signing up and using the service is also made easy for a user. ZenVPN covers all the VPN basics, but does it really have an advantage over its competitors? Well, we have to find that out.

Is My Privacy Protected with ZenVPN?

From the official privacy policy statement mentioned on the official website of the company, it is very clear that ZenVPN does maintain logs: “In accordance with our mission to enhance the privacy and security of our customers, ZenVPN's approach to data collection and retention relies on two basic principles: Keeping the scope of data collection and retention to the bare minimum necessary to ensure the service quality. Maintaining an inventory of our collection, retention and disclosure practices that is public (in the form of this Privacy Policy document), accurate and clear.
Confidential data such as IP address, email address, unique identifier of your smartphone, highly confidential financial details during sign up, etc. will all be stored and sometimes kept indefinitely, which is not what you’d like to hear. VPN specific data such as bandwidth usage, connection date, connection time and duration of the connection are stored and retained by the company for a period of 6 months. Customer support conversations are also retained indefinitely.
ZenVPN also states in their privacy policy that they’d follow the rules framed by the government and would immediately provide information to the concerned authorities if need be. A kill switch feature, rated to be one of the best privacy providers, is also missing. The company is pretty straightforward in its privacy policy. As you can see, it is very clear that all your usage, connection and personal data logs are maintained. All of these make it one of the least reliable VPN service providers, and if you are looking for the best privacy provider, then this should not be your VPN.

How Much is ZenVPN? Is There a Free Trial?

ZenVPN service offers two types of membership plans, namely standard and unlimited. The standard subscription plan is the cost effective one and it comes with bandwidth restrictions. Data transfer is restricted to 5GB/day which should be more than enough if you go online only for a couple hours per day. For those who are choosing a VPN mainly for streaming HD movies and torrenting, this plan will not be good.

Under the standard plan, you can make a monthly subscription payment of $5.95, a weekly payment of $2.95 or a yearly payment of $49.95. The unlimited plan is for those who are extensive internet users and love to watch HD movies and perform torrent downloads. Unlimited data transfer can be enjoyed under the unlimited plan, for which you can make monthly payments of $9.95, weekly payments of $5.95 or a yearly payment of $95.50. Monthly standard and unlimited plans are the most popular ones.
One important news for those who love free services - ZenVPN does offer a free membership plan forever and is quite attractive for occasional users. All the basic features of the service provider are offered for free for a lifetime, but you certainly have to face some limitations and ads frequently. A 30 days money back guarantee is offered for paid subscribers, and a 7-day free trial is also available.

ZenVPN Speed Test

We’re now moving on to the most important feature, the speed at which you can experience the network offered by the company. UK- and US-based servers operated by the company were used for testing the performance metrics of the service. Different servers perform differently, so this result cannot be deemed to be the average result. Download and upload speed test results were pretty decent, with upload speeds surpassing the former with a considerable margin. Other European servers operated by the company did not top the timing sheets for performance. Some US servers seem to show higher upload speeds than download speeds.
DNS leak test results showed a certain degree of leak, which is not very good. IPv6, IPv4 and WebRTC leak tests were good. Smartphone app works pretty fine with respect to these leaks too. The ZenVPN Chrome browser extension seems to perform better in speed ratings compared to the mobile app version. All the results of this browser VPN service turned out to be better than app metrics. WebRTC-masking alone did not work with respect to chrome browser version, whereas it did with the mobile version.

How is Customer Service at ZenVPN?

Customers can make use of the live chat support and email support to contact the company to resolve their problems. However, the live chat support offered online is not available 24/7 and is only available at a certain time of the day, which is disappointing. Email support is fairly straightforward and you can expect to get a mail back within 4 to 6 hours. There is no FAQ section on the web portal and there is not enough knowledge base either.
Contact details of the company are not available and thus it is not as transparent as one would have liked. Program descriptions, setup instructions and guides are also not available. The only real form of communication you could have with the company is through their mailing system, which is a letdown. Overall customer service and support platforms offered to the subscriber are pretty average.

Features

ZenVPN is one of the simplest and easiest to use VPN client software interfaces, and is quite a popular one amongst beginners. The service has servers spread across 34 countries with decent reception. It does maintain activity and usage logs, which is a huge drawback for the service. ZenVPN can be set up very easily, which is one of the main reasons for its growing popularity amongst non-technical subscribers.

The process of signing up and installing a client software on your device is made simple and automatic. There are no long settings, terminologies, complicated configurations and so on, so the process is made simple. Unlimited bandwidth range can be enjoyed under the unlimited package. The free subscription comes with a 250 MB cap. Simultaneous connections are possible and the company lets you connect with as many devices as you want without restrictions. There is no kill switch feature. All the popular types of protocol except for SSTP are offered. Device / OS support for all the major devices and software applications like Mac, Windows, Android and iOS are offered. Bitcoin, and other major payment methods including PayPal, Credit and debit cards are accepted.
Torrenting and P2P sharing capabilities are offered as standard to all the subscribers. You can stream on all the popular video streaming sites as well, but the network speed and quality is a totally different question. Multiple protocol options give you the opportunity to choose the one that you would like to connect with. The feature list is not very extensive, but the free lifetime plan on offer does the company justice.

Is ZenVPN Safe?

Encryption protocols used by ZenVPN include PPTP, L2TP, IPSec and OpenVPN. Using a OpenVPN network, the subscriber can achieve much needed security and data protection. PPTP and L2TP protocol-based networks are well suited for smartphone-based subscribers. PPTP is the faster one of the two, but is not secure, and L2TP is slower but does the job. For site-to-site communication, IPSec should be your preferred option. Under the section of VPN credentials, the subscriber is able to change the type of protocol they need. SSL encryption protection makes sure that your network activity and data processed online are secure.
The network activity performed by the user is anonymous only to a certain extent, which is one of the pitfalls of ZenVPN. As a user, you would definitely like to have additional security features at your disposal, which is lacking here. The free plan is worse on the security front.

Bottom Line

ZenVPN is a good option, but we would not consider it to be one of the best VPN service providers. There is only a handful of servers available for subscribers. Ease of use is one of the strong points of this VPN. The free lifetime plan with a data limit of 250MB is perfect for non-technical and normal internet users all day long. This is one of those services best suited for beginners and is not fit for advanced users. As a final note, we would say that the ZenVPN is good enough, but does not outshine other leading VPN companies and we wouldn’t recommend it over other top services.
